Divya Bharti Death Anniversary: Accident, Suicide or Murder? blow-by-blow account of 90s superstar's tragic death of Divya Bharti who passed away on April 5 1993, at the age of 19.
It has been 29 years since Divya Bharti died in a sad accident. Divya the highest-paid actress of her time died on April 5, 1993, when she was just 19. She was confirmed dead shortly after falling from the balcony of her home in Mumbai. However some people assume she committed suicide. while others feel she was killed.
Troy Ribeiro a famous writer for Stardust Magazine wrote a lengthy article titled ‘The Tragedy That Shook The Nation!’ about Divya’s death. The author interviewed multiple eyewitnesses and Divya’s friend who provided an account of what happened that night.
Ribeiro was a witness and had written, “I happened to be one of the first people to learn about the sad event. I raced to the hospital and despite the fact that the news had been confirmed I remained unconvinced the entire time. It wasn’t until I saw Divya’s body then I realised I couldn’t hide from reality any longer. The report that the hospital officials gave me indicated clearly that the death was caused by the massive fall. Her injuries included a basal skull fracture a damaged left hip bone and fractured ribs. I stayed in the hospital from 1:30 a.m. until 8 a.m. And unfortunately I was an eyewitness to all of the awful events that occurred there that night.”
1. Divya Bharti Revealed Her Depression
“Divya, who have consumed a few drinks expressed her sadness. During her talk with the Lullas. she walked into the kitchen poured herself a glass of white rum and returned to the hall. She turned on her TV and climbed over her balcony to sit on the parapet below her favourite location to sit, rest and sip her drink. However on that fateful day she slip and surrendered to her fate. Mr V. Menon her director’s neighbour who resided on the second floor and Dr Shyam Lulla took Divya to R.N. Cooper hospital. While Neeta went to Divya’s house and her maid to notify her parents and brother. Every attempt was made to save the lovely actress but nothing worked. Divya was pronounced DEAD ON ARRIVAL!”
2. Divya Bharti's Mother Could Not Be Located Till The Early Hours Of The Morning.
“It was around 1:30 a.m and there were only a few people in the hospital. Until that point no one had likely heard of the tragedy. her body was placed on a trolley in the casualty ward. Her father was standing right next to her. He had been devastated by the tragedy. He was simply out of control. ‘They killed my daughter. Everything should be destroyed. ‘I don’t want anything just give me back Divya,’ he cried like a child.
Kunal Divya’s brother, appeared to be equally broken. He stood by his father like a pillar of strength trying to console him. Later, when he couldn’t hold back his tears any longer he exclaimed, ‘I shouldn’t have left my loving sister behind.’ I stayed with her for ten minutes before she could jump. She told me she was very depressed. But I had no idea she’d do something like that. I don’t want anything. All I want is to see my sister again. She was just 19 years old Is it the appropriate age to die?’ He kept repeating himself. His maid-servant then took him aside.”
“Divya’s mother she could not be located until 3 a.m. and arrived at the hospital about 3:45 a.m. still unaware that she had lost her only daughter. She remained silent and stepped near the trolley lifted the veil that covered Divya’s face rested her head on her chest and walked out of the hospital after some time.
3. When Sajid Nadiadwala Saw Divya Bharti Laying Lifeless he Fell To The Ground.
“Sajid ran into the hospital about an hour later. The on-duty doctors sent him to the single trolley in the emergency ward. There was his lovely wife dressed in black trousers and a black and white polka-dotted shirt who appeared to be at peace with herself. Her hair was still covered in blood yet she looked heavenly divine. Sajid’s life seemed to come crumbling down as he saw Divya lifeless.”
“He couldn’t take the shock any longer. He froze for a split second before collapsing on the ground foam flowing from his mouth. ‘At first we believed he too had consumed poison and that this was some sort of murder-suicide between the husband and wife,’ said a doctor on duty. Sajid began thumping strongly only when they attempted to revive him. The physicians realized it was a heart attack at that point. Sajid was promptly sent to the hospital’s ICU He appeared to be suffering from high BP. After briefly regaining consciousness he informed the doctors ‘My wife is down there.’ They claim she is no longer alive. Please take action and try to revive her “.
4. The First Celebrities To See Divya Bharti
“Pahlaj Nihalani who arrived with his wife and boys was the first to arrive from the film industry. Raju Mawani one of Divya’s producers also came in with him. Pahlaj took command of the issue at that point. The physicians had informed him that Mr Bharati had experienced a psychological breakdown and it was he who arranged for Divya’s father to be taken to the hospital’s psychiatric department.”
“People from the industry had begun to arrive at this point. The Morani brothers and their spouses, Joyti, Divya’s secretary’s wife, Boney Kapoor, Govinda, ‘Kartavya’ producers Rahul Gupta and Sunil Saini, Sanjay Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan, and Kamal Sadanah were among the first to arrive.”

5. Divya Bharti Canceled Her Outdoor Shoot In Hyderabad That Day According To A Close Friend
“The cops had already come and were taking testimonies from the two eyewitnesses Neeta lulla and her husband. ‘I was not sure whether Divya had leaped down or whether she had slid accidently because the sequence of events happened in a split-second,‘ Neeta said at the police station. The police had not recorded Divya’s maid’s statement at the time of filing. The strangest account came from Sajid’s father who informed the cops that She and Sajid were not married. ‘In reality, they were meant to marry in three months,’ he said. It was both surprising and shocking to see how people had not developed in the aftermath of such a disaster.”
Back then, her close friend said to Stardust, “That day Divya was quite depressed. That’s why she canceled her outdoor trip to Hyderabad. In truth she had gone shopping that evening to get some items for the new house she was building for herself and Sajid. She then went to a friend’s party. She returned home in great spirits and that’s when she and Sajid got into a big argument. Sajid was leaving his residence to meet with a distributor in the nearby Lokhandwala neighborhood. She yelled angrily at him. ‘If you don’t come back in 5 minutes you won’t see me,’ she warned. Sajid on the other hand ignored her warning. He walked away.
Another of her friends who lived in the same building had a unique story to relate. According to a friend, “That night Sajid and her had a bad fight. He was enraged with her over something, and he was yelling at her over it.
Divya who was already down a few pegs was at a loss for what to do. That’s when she decided to take some sleeping medications. Sajid was in a state of terror. He quickly dialed Dr. Shyam Lulla’s number. Divya’s psychiatrist who had been seeing her for some months. Dr. Shyam and his designer wife Neeta arrived at the residence at 11 p.m. Sajid and Divya were still at odds. According to what I’ve heard the Lulla’s requested Sajid and Kunal (Divya’s brother, who was also present) to leave the house to calm her down. The maid was also instructed to stay in the kitchen. Divya who had been drinking the entire time came to the kitchen for a refill. That was the maid’s last sight of her alive. The disaster began when she entered the hall.”
6. Celebs who Attended Divya Bharti's Funeral
“Aside from Sajid’s, the Nadiawalas’, and Divya’s mother’s erratic behaviour, what I found most repulsive was how the industry responded to her death. They were all more concerned with themselves. Except for Nitin Manmohan no other producer called off the shoots out of respect. Her co-stars did not attend the funeral with the exception of Hema Malini, Babita, Karisma Kapoor, Shilpa Shirodkar, Somy Ali, Sangeeta Bijlani, Sabeeha, Kamal Sadanah, Amrish Puri, Varsha Usgaonkar, Tabu, and Sonu. They were all shooting at the same time. Everyone had acted as if nothing had occurred.”
Actor Divya Bharti Died At Nineteen: 27 Years Later. Her Untimely Death Remains A Mystery To Many.
she appeared out of nowhere lit up the screen and then vanished just as quickly. 27 years later her untimely death continues to be a source of concern for her admirers.
On the other hand her followers refuse to accept that such a promising star and such a young actress could have died. Conspiracy theories abound; a quick internet search will yield a variety of websites stating various things. Some said it was a murder while others said it was a suicide. According to an old Hindustan Times piece from 2011 rumors circulated that it was the work of the underworld at first. “I recall the day” wrote Roshmila Bhattacharya. On April 6, 1993,
I’d just entered the workplace when I learned that Divya Bharti had been shot. ‘Who took the photos?’ Rakesh Shrestha or Gautam Rajadhyaksha?’ I asked a question. My colleague remarked that he wasn’t talking about images. ‘She was gunned down, and I’m told the underworld is involved,’ he whispered. I rejected it as a rumor but within minutes the news that bharti had died was confirmed.”
“We learned at the hospital that she had slipped off the ledge on which she had been seated.” There were rumors of suicide and even murder but her death has eventually ruled an accident and the case was closed.”
The Story Describes Her Final Moments Before Passing Away.
“She was rushed to Cooper Hospital still breathing, clutching the doctor’s shirt sleeve as he promised her she’d be alright.” Then as they approached the hospital’s gates she allegedly yanked on Dr. Lulla’s sleeve one last time before her grasp loosened. “She was certified dead on arrival,” it went on to say.
What’s More Her Family Firmly Believed It Was An Accident.
“There was no question of suicide or murder,” her father Om Prakash Bharti told India Today. Yes, she drank some but how much can you drink in a half-hour? She was also not depressed. She was the type to make you depressed!
“It was a mistake. She sat on the ledge, tripped and fell. Unfortunately all flats except hers had grills. Cars were regularly parked below but there was none that night. She landed on her backside. I was stunned and went insane. But you have to face the facts at some point.”
In some respects Divya Bharti’s brief but adventurous life was legendary. She was a Bollywood outsider who made it big in Bollywood and Telugu cinema decades before nepotism became a phrase that an outsider would adhere to. She comes from a no film family; her father was an insurance official and her mother was a homemaker. But what a spectacular climb she had.
Her debut film, Bobbili Raju (1990), in which she starred alongside Venkatesh (Rana Daggubati’s uncle) was a huge success. In reality it is still remembered as one of the most popular Telugu songs of the 1990s. The young actor would later establish a successful team with famous Telugu actors Chiranjeevi, Mohan Babu, and Nandamuri Balakrishna. She released other hits including Rowdy Alludu and Assembly Rowdy.
After establishing a foothold in Telugu cinema she decided to try her luck in Hindi films. Before her Telugu films were released she was considered for two important Mumbai projects: Radha Ka Sangam (with Govinda, a part that later went to Juhi Chawla) and Gunahon Ka Devta (1988 with Mithun Chakraborty) both of which were canceled. On the other hand Divya was unstoppable following her success in Telugu films. From her debut film Vishwatma (1991) through Kshatriya (her final release during her life) she worked in a string of popular films the most notable of which were David Dhawan’s Govinda-starrer Shola Aur Shabnum and Shah Rukh Khan and Rishi Kapoor’s Deewana.
Looking at the films she had either partially shot for and were later filled in by other actors or had signed on to work in would give you an idea of how excited the industry was about this new and young star — Anil Kapoor and Raveena Tandon’s Laadla (her role was reportedly later re-shot by Sridevi), Akshay Kumar’s Mohra, Ajay Devgn’s Vijaypath and Dilwale (all films went on to become hits). She is working on projects with stars such as Akshay Kumar (Parinaam), Salman Khan (Do Kadam), Rishi Kapoor (Kanyadaan), Sunny Deol (Bajrangi Bhaijaan), and Jackie Shroff (Chal Pe Chal). Does it grow much larger in 1990s Bollywood?
Divya is renowned for her bright personality, attractiveness, acting flexibility, and liveliness. If you turn on any vintage music station nowadays you will almost certainly hear ‘Saat Samundar’ by Vishwatma playing.
